The lagoons are worth the flight.

The paddled trip into the Underground River is what most people fly in for, and the daily permits are capped. Honda Bay fills a second morning with sandbars and snorkelling. It is the easiest Palawan base to reach and the only one you can fly out of late.

The last hour on the water is the good one.
Paraw sails go up off White Beach as the sun drops. On the Iwahig and the Loboc, the mangroves start blinking once it is properly dark. Makati’s rooftops open later still, and none of it asks you to be up at five.
The island you swim, not walk.
Butanding at first light off Oslob, the sardine ball turning over itself a short swim from the beach at Moalboal, and Kawasan’s canyon done the only proper way, which is jumping. Cebu fits all three into one long day if you leave before five.
Hills, tarsiers and a slow river.
The Chocolate Hills are twelve hundred grass-covered mounds you climb a viewing deck to make sense of, the tarsiers next door are the size of a fist and hate noise, and lunch happens on a raft pushed up the Loboc. One loop, one driver, finished by mid-afternoon.
The walls came first.
Intramuros is the Spanish city sitting inside the modern one: the gate at Fort Santiago, San Agustin’s painted ceiling, cobbles you can cover on a bamboo bicycle. The guides here tend to be historians, and the hour before the heat is the one to book.
Pick the island, then the boat.
Palawan for the lagoons and the cave river. Cebu for whale sharks and canyons. Bohol for the hills and the tarsiers. Boracay for the sail at sunset. Manila for the walls, and the flight everyone connects through anyway.
Start from the activity instead.
Some trips get planned around a thing to do rather than a map. Reef days, canyon days, long boat days, and the town walks that want shade by eleven.
Manila lets go quicker than you think.
Taal’s crater lake sits ninety minutes south, the Pagsanjan gorge a little further east, and the Bataan and Corregidor sites are a boat ride across the bay. North takes longer: the Cordillera rice terraces are an overnight, not a morning.
Three days that don’t fight each other.
Domestic flights make or break a short trip here, and one badly placed hop can eat a whole morning. This is the order that wastes the least of it, with what to book on each day.

Land, then walk Intramuros
Manila on the afternoon you arrive: Fort Santiago, San Agustin, and a food walk through Binondo once the heat drops. It is the only day that forgives a late flight.
